When the louvres are fully closed, the galvanised steel roof keeps light to moderate rain off and channels it through drainage built into the frame and down the legs. It is not a sealed room, though: the sides are open, so heavy or wind-driven rain can blow in, and a little can find the joins in a long downpour. Treat it as proper shelter from sun and most showers rather than a watertight roof, and cover furniture or store cushions if heavy rain is forecast.

The louvres are operated by hand, and because it is a split roof each side opens and closes independently, so you can throw one half open to the sun while the other stays shut. Open them for light and air, or close them for shade and shelter.

It is a solar-powered LED system, so there is no wiring and no electrician. A panel charges through the day and the lights run in the evening, switchable between warm and white at the press of a button. The Pure is button-controlled; voice control is on the Luxe range.

Pergola Installations use their own trained, uniformed team and take responsibility for the work. Fitting is usually capped at around eight hours, so most jobs are done in a single day, with a typical turnaround of about 15 working days from booking. Removing the packaging afterwards is not included, so have a plan for the waste.

The pergola unboxed with all parts checked off, the area cleared and accessible, and ideally a solid, level concrete base ready to fix to.

Open the louvres, and any screens, fully so the wind passes through rather than pushing against a closed roof. Do not rest anything on top of the louvres.

Wipe it down with a soft cloth and warm soapy water, steer clear of abrasive cleaners, and keep the drainage channels clear of leaves so water runs away freely. The aluminium frame and galvanised louvres will not rot or rust, so there is no treating or repainting.

A five-year structural warranty on the aluminium frame, with two years on the powder-coated finish and the lighting. It covers manufacturing faults in normal use, not weather damage or general wear and tear.
